My path
After searching really hard for 2d game engines for android I got landed here. Initially I took mercurial checkout through this path . Built jar out of it in eclipse use export option. After this I wanted to try debugging andengine examples , so took checkout of that. there were missing references to android extensions like phyxics, multitouch etc so downloaded them and built jar of those extensions . After adding these references to java library I tried to build the andengine example but still it failed , the reason being the native language used in andengine box 2d , so had to build it through Android NDK and put those built libraries in libs folder of and engine example. The build got succeeded and I ran it on my phone , I was amazed to see its performance, really got delighted .I was really amazed with the physics examples they provided . I am on my way to build a 2d game and upload it to android apps :)
